Hives are also known as urticaria, welts, or wheals. Hives are characterized by a red, raised, itchy skin rash. Hives can be caused by many things, including medications, allergic reactions, and infections. However, in about half of all cases of urticaria, the cause is never found.

Hives can be treated with antihistamines and topical medications.
